About the story

What happens

Derby Day, and for once London is out of doors in fine weather. Cynthia Vanrenen, an American girl with a fortune and an English chaperone, has engaged a car and driver for a ten-day, thousand-mile run through England. On the way to the appointment the hired car comes to grief, and Viscount Medenham, an earl's son lately home from Africa, sees a fine lark in it: he will take the ladies himself, in a chauffeur's cap.

The pretence holds, just, from the Mendips to the Wye, though his manners keep giving him away and the chaperone has arrangements of her own. Louis Tracy runs the motoring romance at full throttle: masquerades, misunderstandings, and a danger that gains on the tour at every turn.
