Cosmic horror · 1908
A diary dug from the ruins of a house in the west of Ireland: swine-things from the Pit, and a vision of the sun going out.
About the story
The timber props hold, and on the other side of the study door the grunting stops. The man inside understands that the swine-things have gone back to the Pit for more of themselves. In the house with him are his sister Mary, who has been told nothing, and a dog that will not stop watching the windows.
Two anglers camping near Kraighten in the west of Ireland dug his diary from the rubble, still smelling of pit-water, a run of its pages destroyed. What it records is stranger than a siege. Before the writing breaks off, the man in the house will watch the sun slow, redden, and go out. It was written a generation before cosmic horror had a name, and few books since have gone further out.
