About the story

What happens

At three in the morning a groom hammers at a Jermyn Street door until the barrister inside answers, and hands him a letter that begins without greeting: someone has tried to murder Margaret Trelawny's father, and she has no one in that house to trust. Malcolm Ross finds the Egyptologist senseless below his locked safe, wrist torn open beside the bangle that holds its key. No one passed the door.

Around him stand the spoils of the Valley of the Sorcerer — a queen's sarcophagus, a mummied hand of seven fingers — and sealed instructions telling his daughter exactly how he must be watched, and by whom. The mummy story later horror kept coming back to, and beneath it a father who will not let his daughter go.
