Anne Medway and Kenneth Graham grew up almost as brother and sister. She is a rich young widow now; he is a poor officer sailing for India, and on his last evening neither says the thing that would keep him. Five weeks later her old manservant climbs the stairs, pale, to say the Major is downstairs: standing on the library hearthrug exactly as before, silent, his hand resting where she cannot feel it.
